I was in The Spirit on The Day of The Lord.”

Thus does the apostle John begin the record that The Lord Jesus Christ commanded him to write, that which we know as the Book of Revelation, or to give its true title: The Book of The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

The subject of this wonderful and mysterious book is The Day of The Lord which is referred to many times in both the Old and New Testaments The Bible reveals many details of both God’s and man’s activities during this ‘Day’ of which there have been many interpretations.

This article is deals with the events of this ‘Day’, the time of its beginning and end.

After the end of his first commission, the apostle Paul was determined to win Christ by ‘pressing towards the mark for the prize of the High Calling of God in Christ Jesus’. He describes the process by which this was to be attained when he wrote to his friends at Philippi. [Phil ch.3]. A few years later, by his writing to the Christians at Ephesus and Colosse, it is clear that he had entered this new calling and been granted the revelation of God’s Administration of Grace [Eph 3:2] within which this Calling is fulfilled. It is this Godly Administration which applies to all mankind to-day. and which ends when The Day of The Lord begins. It is Paul’s prayer that:

Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe,

When this Great Day which lasts for over three thousand years, ends at the Great Eternal Judgement, before The Day of God begins, God revealed to Paul that there would be another Administration:

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the Administration of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will [Eph 1:10]

The diagrams on this and the following page show the relationship of :

C. The Day of The Lord

!. The letters of Paul, apostle to the Nations, describe a progressive relationship of God with firstly those Jews followed by the Gentiles who have put their trust in Him. The first seven of Paul’s letters are addressed to the churches of the Jews who recognised that Jesus Christ is their Messiah. In the first half of the first century AD vast numbers of Jews were converted to Christ as their Saviour. A few Gentiles were included at that time, all hoping in a Kingdom in Israel where The Lord Jesus Christ would be King.

1 & 2 Thessalonians, Galations, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Hebrews, and Romans.

2. Four of Pauls following letters came to be written after God had struck the Jews with Spiritual blindness and deafness. In this transitory period Paul found it necessary to give instructions for the ordering of new believers who had a new relationship with God governed by the distribution of the Good News of Salvation in John’s Gospel. During this period Paul found it necessary to press forward in his understanding of God’s requirements for his life. To leave behind all of his formal relationship with his standing as an Israselite that he may gain nothing except Christ Himself. This was a traumatic period for Paul.

Titus, 1 & 2 Timothy and Philippians

3. As a result of Paul’s trauma and dedication to Christ alone, God was able to reveal to him His plans for a new Administration during the period of the Jews Spiritual blindness. God had determined to introduce a period in which He would demonstrate His unique Graceful character directed to all mankind. This is a secret Administration revealed to Paul alone and completes the record of Paul’s fourteen New Testament letters in those to the Ephesians and the Colossians.

Colossians, Philemon and Ephesians.
What is the resurrection Hope of these three groups of Christians? They all look forward to a time when Christ Himself will again be present upon the Earth ruling all mankind. Christians to-day know this as The Second Advent or The Second Coming at which time there will be many resurrections. This action of God is described in the first group of Paul’s letters and amongst all the events described in the Book of Revelation

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

CO1 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. [CO1 15:22]

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? [CO1 15:51]

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. [Rev 19:11]

These passages describe that remarkable event to which the Spirit endowed Christians of the first century expected to be partakers. Had God not postponed this event because of the intransigence of the Jews, most of them would have been alive and remaining to partake in it long ago.

However, they had expected the Kingdom of Heaven to be manifested at the time when The Day of The Lord began on the ‘Day of Jesus Christ’. They all looked forward to this, in fact they had been advised because of its imminence not to remarry or .to take on new responsibilities.

For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus. And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; [CO2 1:12]

When that single day dawned, Paul and the Corinthians knew that it would be one of rejoicing because of their common faith and work together. The full benefits of the Kingdom would then be manifest with Christ rulling Israel from heaven:

and the power of the Spirit

The God inspired prophecy of Enoch, the seventh from Adam, concerning The Apocalypse of Weeks, limits the span of time occupied by The Day of The Lord. [See By Grace No:11. Introduction to The Book of Enoch]. However, the events described during these days coincide exactly with the events in the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

The following quotations are thought to refer to the period between the end of Daniel’s 70 weeks and the end of The Last Days. However, there is evidence to accept that the term: The Time of The End is the termination of The Last Days period.
The Time of The End.

Daniel 8:17-19 Understand O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision…… Behold I will make the know what shall be in the last end of the indignation [wrath of God]: for at the time appointed the end shall be [See Dan 8:20-25]

Dan 9:26 And after three score and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the Prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Dan 11:35 And some of them of understanding shall fall to try them and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.

Dan 11:40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the South push at him: and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind with chariots and with horsemen and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries and shall overflow and pass over.

Dan 11:45 And he shall plant the tabernacle of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

Dan 12:4 But thou O Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased

Dan 12:6 And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, how long shall it be to the end of these wonders…..it shall be for time, times and a half and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Dan 12:9 And he said, go thy way Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

The Last Days

All the following Old Testament prophecies concern The Last Days period of 520 years which is the equivalent of the 17 years which were the Last Days of Jacob’s life. Famine in Canaan compelled him and his eleven sons to enter Egypt to purchase corn

1. GEN 49:1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in The Last Days. Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father

2   NUM 24:14  And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of
mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? And now, behold, I go
unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.

3  DEU 4:30 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

4   DEU 31:29  For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands. And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.
5  ISA 2:2 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

6 JER 23:20 The anger of the LORD shall not turn back, until he have executed, and till he have set up the purposes of his heart: in the latter days ye shall understand it perfectly.

7  JER 30:24 Behold, the tempest of Jehovah goes forth, a sweeping tempest: it shall swirl upon the head of the wicked. The fierce anger of Jehovah shall not turn back, until he has finished and until he has fulfilled the intentions of his heart: in the latter days you will understand it.

8. JER 48:47 Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

9  JER 49:39 But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.

10. EZE 38:16 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the nations may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

11   DAN 2:28 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in The Last Days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;…………..And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter [in the LD gtm]: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

12  DAN 10:14  Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days

13   HOS 3:5  For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim: Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.
14  MIC 4:1  But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.........And in that day, saith The Lord, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather [Heb: qabats] her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted.

15  ACT 2:16  But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

16. JAM 5:1  Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that are (gk.) come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye treasured up in (gk) The Last Days.

17. HEB 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

18   2 Pet 3:3    Knowing this first, that there will (gk.) come at (gk.) the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming (Gk: parousia)? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

19. 2 Tim 2 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

MARK

MAR 13:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

MAR 13:4 Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

MAR 13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:

MAR 13:6 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

MAR 13:7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.

MAR 13:8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

MAR 13:9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

MAR 13:10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

MAR 13:11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

MAR 13:12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.

MAR 13:13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

MAR 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

MAR 13:15 And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:

MAR 13:16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.

MAR 13:17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

MAR 13:18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.

MAR 13:19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

MAR 13:20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.

MAR 13:21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:

MAR 13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

MAR 13:23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

MAR 13:24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

MAR 13:25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

MAR 13:26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

MAR 13:27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

MAR 13:28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

MAR 13:29 So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

MAR 13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

MAR 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

MAR 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

MAR 13:33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
